In the 1970s there was a surge in demand for Mocal coolers.   Setrab in Sweden had secured valuable contracts to supply oil coolers to Volvo and Saab and decided to set up manufacture on their own account.   Setrab produced a pressed plate cooler (STD) of very similar size design and performance to the Mocal, however they produced tooling that gave them the potential to produce a far greater range of widths giving them the ability to offer a standard range of over 700 different sizes, each with a large variety of connections.   Setrab also produce a flat tube and fin cooler in two depths (COM), a shell and tube cooler (TOC) and kits comprising a pressed plate coolers combined with an electric fan (CP). There is also a slimline flat tube & fin (SLM) but this has M18 female connections.

Setrab are very much orientated to the OEM market which imposes many disciplines in terms of delivery schedules, quality control and environmental issues, however they do not wish to ignore the aftermarket so have asked us to distribute their coolers but with a much reduced list of sizes and just one, M22 x 1.5 female connection size. This range is called Proline .

Proline coolers-Performance

We have not included performance graphs.   We have a computer system that will predict results on any of the range, we require   oil, coolant and air flows together with temperature differentials.

Setrab coolers- Standard range

We are still able to offer the standard range (not to be confused with the STD range!) but must order a minimum of 10 units, expect a 3 month delivery time and pay a premium price, however we have built up a small   but changing stock of these standard coolers so if you require an item not covered by our Proline or Mocal ranges please enquire. Seperate brochures and price lists are available for this range.

System 22

Setrab have decided that all their Proline coolers sold in Europe will have a M22 female thread to take male/male adaptors sealed with a rubber sealing ring.

We at Think Automotive were not convinced that it was a good idea, arguing that having to buy adapters increased the cost, that it involved an extra joint and that it increased the height of the assembled unit.   However we could see that the range of coolers to be stocked was much reduced and that the end user had a great deal more flexibility when choosing hose sizes and type of fitting.

When Setrab asked us to distribute Proline we decided that the solution was to provide a series of swivel male fittings to suit the most popular types of hose.   It then seemed logical to adopt the concept, call it "System 22"and broaden our range of oil cooler hardware to suit.   Mocal coolers will still be sold with BSP & JIC male fittings however we see no reason to stay with 1/2 BSP on components having female ports these will eventually be M22. This would have the effect of establishing an industry standard
